PASSPORT

Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of your entry into Kenya. Passports must have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Confirm the current rules and regulations for a valid passport requirement see the website of the Kenya High Commission.

VISA

All visitors require a visa to enter Kenya. The Kenyan Government issues two types of visas: An electronic visa (e-Visa) and a traditional visa stamped into your passport for a standard fee of USD50. You can apply for single entry and/or transit visas on e visas website before you travel from your home country, which can minimize time spent on queuing at the airport. Alternatively, you can get your single entry visa upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The e-Visa is valid for a single entry only for a stay of up to 90 days and is extendable for up to an additional 90 days by submitting additional documentation while in the country. It is very easy to apply for the e-Visa; (i) You do not require submitting your physical passport, (ii) It can be issued within 2-3 working days business days. When you travel you must carry the e Visa printout issued to you from the www.ecitizen.go.ke portal.

A Traditional Visa allows for multiple entry into Kenya and is valid for 6 months from the date of issue. If you require a multiple entry visa go to the nearest Kenyan High Commission or Embassy in your country. For more information on different types of visas see the website of the Kenya High Commission.

An East Africa Tourist Visa allows for one visa to be issued valid for entry into all three member countries – Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda for tourism purposes. It is valid for multiple entries within the three countries and shall be valid for 90 days from the date of issue. The visa remains valid for the 90 days only if you remain in the region. Currently, the East Africa Tourist Visa is only issued as a stamped visa.

YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers coming into Kenya since part of this country is in the Yellow Fever endemic zone. Prepare to show your certificate of vaccination (or a waiver stating the medical reasons for not being vaccinated). A vaccination waiver can be issued by your medical practitioner for medical reasons. Nevertheless, the vaccination waiver may not be honored when crossing borders. Take anti-malarial drugs if going on safari. Your hotel will provide anti-mosquito measures for your accommodation.

Hand-shaking is a cultural greeting gesture. Tipping is at your discretion where a service charge is not included. The dress code in Kenyan culture is conservative. If you are going for business, keep it business-casual; business suits, tie and formal wear are preferred. Track suits are acceptable during the training.  Kenyans dress up for special occasions, especially when going to church, to sporting and other events. You may want to wear your nicer clothing if you are considering dining at one of the more up-scale restaurants, having a social night out, going to party or out dancing.

Kenya is a multilingual country. Kiswahili and English are widely spoken as lingua franca, the official languages of Kenya. Both these languages are spoken in Kaptagat, however, most people prefer to speak Kiswahili.  Apart from English and Kiswahili, more than 40 indigenous languages are spoken in the country. Kiswahili is widely spoken in East and Central Africa – Tanzania, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, Zaire and Congo.
