Forest Marathon

Annual Forest Marathon

The Annual Kaptagat Forest Marathon premiere took place on September 8 2018, and the second edition took on September 9 2019. Proceeds from the races purchased seeds and tubes for small household nurseries. Each edition of the Race costs KES 2M. In 2019, Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company, ELDOWAS (eldowas.or.ke) paid KES 500,000 cash award shared between 40 top athletes (both elite men and women categories).

The Kaptagat Forest Marathon began as a pure annual community race but exceeded its expectations. Encouraged by the success of the premier Race, the organizers resolved to raise the bar of the Marathon to international level while living to their conservation goal. The fact that the Kaptagat area is home to world-class athletes contributed to the success of the first edition. There are over 16 athletic training camps that find the Race of interest.

The Race is run close to Kaptagat Forest on a point to point plan. The 2018 premiere race was won by a two times Toronto Half Marathon Champion, Philemon Rono of Global Camp in Kaptagat, and Hannover Half Marathon and former World Cross Country Bronze Medallist, Cynthia Cherop. Joyce Chepkemoi who came 3rd in the 2018 race, clinched the title in the 2019 edition of the Marathon.
