Our History

KF Foundation was established in 2014 as a Corporate Social Investment (CSR) programme for Ellegirini Greenpark. The goals of the programme were (1) to create awareness on the impact of deforestation of Kaptagat Forest, (2) to link sports with conservation for effective communication, and (3) to provide supports for youth Conservation-based entrepreneurship.
In 2014, the Greenpark, in collaboration, organized soccer tournaments for 13 Football Clubs within the periphery of Kaptagat Forest. The clubs worked in association with local schools, developed tree nurseries and planted fruits and indigenous trees in school woodlots. The youthful clubs had little or no time for the demanding Conservation-based entrepreneurship. The tree growing and the establishment of nurseries programmes stalled.

In 2018, the Greenpark launched Kaptagat Forest Half Marathon to create awareness of the necessity for rehabilitating the Kaptagat ecosystem and Elgeyo Escarpment watershed and (2) to raise funds for establishing conservation-based enterprises at the household label.

In 2019, the Greenpark established Ellegirini Sports Academy for the empowerment of young women athletes. Besides nurturing athletics talent, the provided education and training on Kaptagat Forest ecosystems’ importance to the athlete. The covid-19 spike in 2020 led to a temporary closure of the Academy.

In 2019, the Greenpark initiated Kaptagat Forest Marathon Foundation registration, with the Greenpark Director as the administrator during its formative stage. The KF Foundation provides a base for sustainable Kaptagat forest ecosystem restoration and the creation of nature sanctuaries through community participation, sports and advocacy.
