Introduction

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 2018 edition of Kaptagat Forest Half Marathon (KFHM) was convened by Elagerini Camp (the TITLE SPONSOR of the Half Marathon) and other sponsors were Telkom Kenya, Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI), Dola, Reale Hospital, Kenya Forest Service, Tristar, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. This sponsorship was in kind.  The LOC comprised Elagerini Camp, Keino Sports Event, Athletic Kenya, Greater Kaptagat Green Association (GreKGA) and other stakeholders. The bulk of the funds raised came from registration. Each of the 373 athletes paid Ksh500 to participate in the run. Schools and corporate bodies paid Ksh1, 000 for their teams or groups.

Marathon

The LOC has since changed its name to Kaptagat Marathon Organising Committee (KMOC) in preparation for the next Kaptagat Forest Half Marathon. This Committee is responsible for the organisation of 2019 Kaptagat Forest marathon and based in Elagerini Camp and Safari Villastays. A steering committee shall decide on the marathon organisation priorities and manage the event and general course of the marathon operations. The goal of the 2019 edition of Kaptagat Forest 21km Marathon and the 5km Fun Run (and if funds allow inclusion of a 42km marathon)is; (i)to raise awareness on the need for the conservation of Kaptagat Forest, (ii) create work for youths, (iii) improve living standards of communities living within the border of Kaptagat Forest, (iv)generate revolving funds for the conservation-based activities, and (v) sports talent development.

In-kind sponsors may opt to support the development of GreKGA activities listed below.

  1. GreKGA Resource Centre education and training activities
  2. Eco-entrepreneur Conferences and affiliate clubs and societies experiential tours
  3. Product development (nurseries for commercial trees and fruits for food/alternative cash crop)
  4. Eco-Journal publication (and other IEC materials)
  5. Apiculture and honey cottage industry
  6. Ecotourism for sustainable management forest ecosystem
